‘Suffragette’ was one of the blockbuster films of 2015 winning awards for its account of the campaign for ‘votes for women’. However the film presented Emmeline Pankhurst as leader of a movement based in London. Lots of women from the East Midlands, including Nottingham, contributed. We will explore the ‘Nottingham story’ looking at local women such as Helen Watts and highlighting key Nottingham moments from arson attacks to rallies and meetings. Students will then have the opportunity to use existing skills in art, poetry, photography and music to update a public online exhibition celebrating Nottingham’s suffragette history.
