Course Aims

This course is aimed at people with a reasonable level of computer skills who want to know more about word processing, using spreadsheets and how to store and move files around on your computer. The course will also introduce learners to online file storing and back up such as Dropbox, Flickr etc.

It is intended that this course will enable learners to identify future learning needs and identify other courses they may need to develop their skills.

Any prior knowledge or entry requirements?

Students should be conversant with using a mouse, navigating windows and storing and moving files in word and excel.

Potential students without these skills should attend the basic IT courses on Thursday or Friday morning at Vernon Community College (or other suitable courses) prior to attending this course

Course content: what topics will the course cover?

•        Basic use of Windows Explorer/Library

•         Toolbars and Commands in Windows

•         Windows file structure and file storage, including use of data sticks, online storage etc

•         Tool bars and commands

•         Online document storage eg Dropbox, Flickr etc

•         Overview of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access

•         Basic Word Processing (Word)

•         Basic Spreadsheets (Excel)

•         Windows system tools, restore, defrag, etc

The tutor can provide you with information about what you can do next with the WEA and other local providers. By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1.Create a file structure and move and store files
2.Be able to use the basic system tools in windows
3.Know which office programme suits which tasks
4.Be able to customize office tool bars, templates etc
5.Be able to create new documents in Word, Excel
