Join this course to gain practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of what is meant by the terms installation and intervention. Tutor Chris Lewis Jones will introduce you to how these ideas manifest themselves in contemporary art and give the materials and ideas to create your own.

Course Outline
The aims of the course

  • Enhance learners’ understanding and appreciation of the ways in which we use objects  (including our bodies) within assemblage, installation, live art and intervention
  • Enhance learners’ ability to engage in creative collaboration
  • Enhance learners’ ability to engage in and appreciate/enjoy contextual analysis
  • Enhance learners’ ability to engage with contemporary art

Topics to be covered

Topics and content will be dictated by evolving vocational and educational aspirations and needs of the learning group, as a whole, and of each individual learner. However, they will certainly include:

Using objects in assemblage, using objects in installation, reading objects as texts (semiotics),  hermeneutics, collaborative design, intervention and live art, drawing with non-drawing media (such as light, wire and bodies), research into art and artists, contemporary theory and practice, visual literacy and presentation values

Learning outcomes

As a result of attending this course it may be possible for you to:

  • Design and produce an installation
  • Design and produce an assemblage
  • Design and produce a collaborative intervention
  • Co-Design and co- produce a collaborative intervention
  • Design and display a cross media drawing composition

extending beyond the page and beyond the gallery

performative approaches to mark making

responding to a theme (installation and assemblage)

presentation values

responding to a theme (installation and intervention)

installation into intervention via the derive

curating, presenting, analysing and evaluating

 Evaluative collaborative installation and/or intervention
