Course blurb:

Through a series of practical, hands-on activities, participants will get to grips with the basics of using a computer and searching the internet. For those who have little or no previous experience with computers, the course offers a glimpse into the wonders offered on the world-wide web and an introduction to modern methods of communication through email and instant messaging.

Course aims

To overcome initial fears of the internet and enhance confidence in completing basic computer tasks.

To explore and de-mystify some of the most common uses of the internet.

To develop learner’s knowledge and skills in using the internet for sending/receiving emails and searching websites for information.

To provide a basic introduction to computers and the internet, that learners can build on through further training, in employment or at home.

• Setting up an email account (Gmail)
• Sending/receiving emails with and without attachments
• Creating a contact list and using chat instant messaging
• Searching the internet using Google – surfing the world-wide web
• Exploring Google Maps and Images

COURSE OUTLINE

The aims of the course

To enable learners to understand and expand their knowledge of basic computer use especially Windows and the Internet.

This course is for learners with no or very limited understanding of computers and the internet and is designed to be a spring-board to equip learners to begin to explore more about computers. The classes are informal and the group will be encouraged to help each other and talk about any fears they may have about computers

After the first 2 weeks the course may be adjusted depending on the level of current knowledge of learners and areas of interest students may have.

• The buttons and operation of a computer, what it all means and what to look for when buying a computer
• Use of the keyboard and mouse
• Navigating windows with the mouse
• Navigating the internet
• Setting up an email account and sending and receiving emails with or without attachments
